ACCOUNTING BASICS · NEGRO BUSINESS GUIDE

Small business accounting in Ghana: where to start.

Good accounting starts with a dependable record of what happens in your business. Before focusing on reports, organise the information those reports depend on.

1. Keep business records together

Choose a consistent place for sales records, purchase documents, receipts and bank statements. Keep personal and business activity clearly distinguishable.

For each transaction, record the date, amount, currency, purpose and supporting document. Use descriptions that will still make sense months later.

2. Use consistent categories

Group similar income and expenses consistently. If a category is unclear, note the question instead of assigning different labels each time.

A bookkeeper or accountant can help choose a structure that reflects the way your business operates.

3. Compare records with real activity

Regularly compare your records with bank statements and other payment records. Investigate missing entries, duplicates and amounts that do not match.

4. Review, then act

Set aside time to review income, expenses and outstanding customer balances. Use the review to identify questions and follow-up work.

This guide covers record organisation, not Ghanaian tax filing requirements. Discuss statutory accounting and tax obligations with a qualified local adviser.
